Totnes area of South Devon. Bed & breakfast and holiday accommodation is
available in hotels, guest houses, pubs, farmhouses, private houses, apartments
and cottages in town
and the surrounding villages.
When booking accommodation with a provider, we would be
most grateful if you would help us and mention that you
found their accommodation details on the Totnes Information Centre website.
Where serviced or hosted accommodation also includes some self catering
facilities that are advertised with us, this is indicated in the selected table.
National Quality Standards
In 2003, the English Tourism Council merged with the British Tourist Authority
to form VisitBritain(VB),
the national tourism agency.
VisitBritain, the AA and the RAC joined together to create National Quality
Assurance Standards (NQAS), a unified rating scheme for accommodation. Under
this scheme, accommodation was inspected and given a grading, using a simple one
to five system. The higher the rating, the better the overall quality and the
greater the range of facilities and service.
Since January 2006, the grading scheme has undergone significant changes. The VisitBritain scheme is now called
Quality in Tourism
- click on the link to find out more about the changes to the grading structure.
A very brief overview is given in the table shown below. In England, the scheme
is named 'Enjoy England' and the Quality Rose is the official marque. The AA
symbol remains the same. The RAC have withdrawn from the scheme completely.

Hotel and Hostels are given
star ratings. There are more sub categories than previously existed. |
 |
Self catering is given star ratings. |
 |
Until 2006, guest accommodation (guest houses, inns, B&Bs,
farmhouses) was given diamonds. Since 2006, all gradings have gradually change to a
star rating (plus a designation eg farmhouse, guesthouse etc). There are
also more categories than existed previously. By 2008 all gradings
should be stars. |

Caravan and camping parks are rated by stars.

establishments that achieve the very highest levels of quality. |

The National Accessible Scheme gives gradings for
mobility, hearing and visual impairments. Accommodation providers join
this scheme on a voluntary basis. |
Accommodation awaiting inspection or grading may have the phrase ‘awaiting
inspection’ in place of a symbol or award.
Welcome to Excellence is a nationally recognised customer care initiative that
replaces Welcome Host |

Green Tourism Awards are given to those
who promote and practise
sustainable tourism. Awards are valid for two years. The most recent awards,
given since the scheme was rolled out to South West Tourism, will show a leaf,
not a tree. |
Green Tourism
In December 2005, the South Hams Green Tourism Scheme (see award logo above)
was rolled out by South West Tourism to cover the whole of the South West.
Click here to go to South Hams District Council's tourism website and follow
the "Green Holidays" link to find information about Green Tourism and businesses
in the district which have
gained Green Tourism awards.
Please note that the details of accommodation on this website are based on the
2008 Totnes Guide. Although correct at the time of inclusion in the guide, quality ratings
and classification are subject to change. Totnes Information Centre

Accommodation Bookings
Cancellations
Please remember that in Britain a telephone booking or written confirmation is
generally accepted as a legally binding contract. You may also be required to
send a deposit and this could be forfeited should you cancel your reservation.
If you do need to cancel, please let the accommodation provider know as soon as
possible. Please check cancellation terms at the time of booking.
Complaints
The majority of people have a wonderful holiday. However, if you are unhappy
about any aspect of your accommodation or the service, please tell the manager
or owner immediately. Most problems can be solved straight away. If the
accommodation is registered under the NQAS scheme, it is also possible to take
unresolved complaints to the appropriate inspection body. |
