Welcome to Totnes

Totnes is an ancient market town and river port in the South Hams area of South Devon. Mellow with age, yet lively and forward-looking, it covers a long hill sloping gently to the Dart estuary, surrounded by rich and beautiful countryside.

The busy, narrow streets, dominated by castle and church tower, are full of architectural and historic interest, while the green horizon is always visible just beyond the houses.

The town enjoys good road and rail communications, and is within easy reach of both Dartmoor and the sea, making it an ideal holiday centre at any time of the year.

Totnes has always been a market town and centre of trade for the surrounding countryside, and this is still the case. A full range of shopping and banking facilities can be found in and around the main streets.

The shops are friendly and individual, as befits a place of such character. Traditional butchers, greengrocers and bakers can be found, all emphasising quality and customer care. Locally made, heathily prepared food and drink can be bought here, fresh from the producer. Totnes is widely known for such essentials of good living as wholefoods, fine arts, antiques, second hand and antiquarian books, handmade shoes, ceramics, unusual boutiques, handmade furniture, musical instruments, crystals and complimentary therapies. Explore the Friday and Saturday Markets below the Civic Hall for a feast of bargains.

Nor do you ever need to look far in Totnes for refreshment, as the range of cafes, pubs, restaurants, wine bars and takeaways is equally rich and satisfying, suiting every taste and pocket.
